ABOUT Miao Jiang:

Miao Jiang

Miao Jiang is a London-based womenswear designer whose practice explores the relationship between philosophy, craft, and material. Drawing on Taoist thought and the quiet balance between void and matter found in traditional Chinese furniture, she approaches fashion as a space where opposing elements can coexist.

Her work is grounded in a respect for the inherent character of raw materials. Silk, wool, leather, clay, and wood are transformed through minimal cutting, macramé, and hand-stitching, allowing their textures, irregularities, and natural qualities to remain visible rather than being concealed.

Ancient Taoist ideas inform this process without being translated literally. Instead, they emerge through the construction of the garments—the balance between structure and softness, presence and absence, restraint and movement. Miao's approach is deliberately considered, allowing the material itself to guide the design.

By bringing together traditional Chinese philosophy, craft, and contemporary womenswear, she creates pieces that feel both grounded and unexpected. Her work proposes a slower, more attentive way of making, where the dialogue between the hand, the material, and the body becomes part of the garment's story.
