ABOUT Johanna Hehemann:
Johanna Hehemann is a fashion and textile designer whose practice explores the relationship between craft, material knowledge, and storytelling. Working across knitwear, tailoring, and textile development, she is driven by a deep curiosity for how textiles are made and the narratives embedded within every stage of their creation.
Her design approach was profoundly shaped by her experience in the Regenerative Textile Garden, where she cultivated flax and followed its transformation into linen—from seed to fibre, yarn, and fabric. Combined with a minor in textile chemistry, this hands-on research gave her a rare understanding of the material's complete lifecycle, inspiring a practice that values transparency, process, and craftsmanship as much as the finished garment.
For her graduate collection, Johanna chose linen as the exclusive material, collaborating with flax producers across Europe while incorporating fibres grown within the garden into selected looks. This research also became an opportunity to rethink the possibilities of one of fashion's oldest fibres. Through experimental knitting, needle-felting, and innovative textile manipulation, she challenges conventional perceptions of linen, revealing unexpected qualities that are elastic, tactile, and almost fur-like.
Her work ultimately invites a closer appreciation of the people, processes, and knowledge behind textile production, transforming material research into garments that communicate both innovation and respect for craft.
