Aideen Gaynor, 22 years old, was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Dublin, Ireland. She graduated with a First Class honours degree in Fashion Design from the National College of Art and Design, Ireland in 2016.
Aideen was recently awarded the Brown Thomas Bursary and mentoring programme, by fashion director Shelly Corkery selected as “designer to watch” and given the opportunity to participate in Brown Thomas Create 2016.
She has worked in costume on the Showtime series Penny Dreadful and completed internships with John Rocha and Simone Rocha in both London and Dublin and with Lela Rose in New York as well as having completed pre-college programs at the Grafton Academy of dress design, Dublin and at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
Her degree collection Hard Boiled Wonderland , draws influence from the novel Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Author Haruki Murakami, viewed in the context where childhood is used as a route of escapism for adults.
Primary research derives from representations of the clothing of Victorian childhood and the portraits of the “Hidden Victorian Mothers” draped in heavy floral upholstery fabric, reminiscent of a Christopher Dresser print. The collection seeks to create a contrived narrative of densely printed and overwhelming silhouettes.
